JUST IN: U.S. Service Member Killed In Northern Iraq, CENTCOM Announces

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday announced that a U.S. service member was killed in action in northern Iraq.

“Yesterday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the passing of two U.S. service members and the missing status of one in Jordan following an Iranian attack on July 17. After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing,” CENTCOM stated.

“Separately, a U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. A second service member was wounded and continues to receive medical treatment for a minor injury,” it continued.

“CENTCOM is withholding additional information, including the identities of the missing and fallen warriors, out of respect for the families during the notification process,” it added.

In retaliation for the service members killed in Jordan, the U.S. military launched another wave of airstrikes, targeting Iran’s military coastal surveillance, air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites.

The U.S. military has widened its attacks on Iran in recent days, striking energy infrastructure, port facilities, bridges and other targets, as both sides inch closer to an all-out war.

Iran has retaliated with strikes against Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait — all countries where the U.S. has substantial military presence. Iran has struck oil facility, power and water treatment plants in Kuwait.

Kuwaiti military said Sunday its air defense systems are working on intercepting Iranian missiles and one-way attack drones.

“On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing,” CENTCOM announced on Saturday.

“Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged. Other personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty,” it continued.

“Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold additional information, including the identities of the fallen warriors, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified,” it added.

The mounting death toll has effectively ended the interim ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran negotiated last month. After weeks of trading accusations that each side has violated the agreement, the two countries resumed attacks, with U.S. forces striking Iranian military targets and Tehran launching missiles and drones at U.S. allies in the region.

Late Saturday, CENTCOM said U.S. forces completed the eighth consecutive night of launching munitions against Iran, targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces believed to have been involved in Friday’s attack on U.S. service members in Jordan.
