Jon Ossoff Crossed a Line With Natalie Harp

Sen. Jon Ossoff is free to criticize President Donald Trump. That’s his job as an opposition politician. But during a recent Georgia campaign rally, Ossoff went further, singling out White House aide Natalie Harp in a remark that was unnecessary and inappropriate.

“While the sailors on the Lincoln fight his war, while he fruitlessly drains our munitions and oil reserves, the president sleeps through his meetings, he golfs, and trades stocks,” Ossoff said Sunday. “He doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.”

Ossoff delivered the scripted attack line during a campaign rally in Georgia, where he is running for reelection against Republican Mike Collins, a U.S. congressman from the state’s 10th District.

Jon Ossoff’s Attack

Even though the rally featured Ossoff’s standard criticism of Collins, it was his attack on Harp that drew the most attention. The White House, Republican members of Congress, and conservatives quickly condemned the first-term senator for mentioning the 35-year-old White House executive assistant.

“Natalie Harp survived bone cancer because President Trump allowed her the ‘right to try.’ Now she’s an extremely hardworking and trusted assistant. Any other insinuation is vile,” Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, wrote on X.

Harp is not a household name. She might be best known for publicly crediting Trump’s signing the Right to Try Act in May 2018 with helping her pursue experimental treatments after a bone cancer diagnosis that many believed would prove terminal.

“Right to Try empowers the terminally ill to fight with dignity for life-saving experimental treatments and potential cures rather than be forced into pain clinics and ‘Death With Dignity,’” she said in 2019, according to Liberty University, her alma mater.

‘Meanspirited Jerk’

Whether or not Ossoff knew Harp’s personal story, singling out a White House aide was questionable judgment for a U.S. senator.

“Do his minions realize that outside of their BlueSky echo chamber, this does not come across as an attack on Trump. This is an attack on a young woman who works in the White House. This meanspirited jerk is using her as collateral damage in a feeble attempt to go viral,” radio host Larry O’Connor said Monday.

Trump, asked about Ossoff’s attack Monday, dismissed the senator as a Pee-wee Herman lookalike. His White House staff strongly defended their colleague.

“Instead of denigrating hard working people serving their country, Jon should look deep into his soul and ask himself why he’s a miserable person who hates this country. It’s because he’s a radical, extremist Dumocrat,” wrote Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director.

In a statement to Politico, spokesman Davis Ingle added, “Natalie Harp is one of the most loyal and hardest working aides on President Trump’s team. Jon Ossoff is a cringeworthy, feminine theatre kid cosplaying as Barack Obama.”

Jon Ossoff’s Ambitions

Ossoff’s defenders view the controversy as little more than hardball politics. But the exchange also raises a larger question: Why mention Harp at all? Her inclusion added nothing substantive to Ossoff’s critique of Trump. It did, however, generate the kind of viral political moment that rewards ambitious national politicians.

Ossoff’s decision to single her out was intentional, and it appeals to a segment of the Democrat activist base that rewards aggressive attacks on Trump.

For those closely following Ossoff’s reelection campaign, it appears clear that he’s looking beyond Georgia to a bigger stage in 2028.

That seemed to be the consensus during my Monday appearance on NBC News NOW’s “Meet the Press.”

Jon Ossoff is auditioning for 2028, plain and simple.

He’s so desperate to appeal to the far-left Bluesky echo chamber that he doesn’t care if Natalie Harp is collateral damage. You’re spot on, @LarryOConnor.

That’s what makes his attack so disgusting.

“It says more about 2028 than it probably does about 2026,” Dan Merica of the Washington Post said. “It seems like Jon Ossoff is rightfully getting a lot of presidential attention, and I think it’s because of videos like that. He is clearly testing outlines beyond maybe the confines of a Senate race.”

When our co-panelist Ashley Etienne, the former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, said she didn’t understand what was objectionable about Ossoff’s comments, Merica explained why people are reacting negatively.

“It’s the innuendo and bringing up his personal aide,” Merica said. “I would love to know what Natalie Harp, let alone what Natalie’s name ID is in Georgia. That is for an audience that plays to a very online base that knows who Natalie Harp is, that knows the innuendo in that, and that’s why I think it’s easy to say this isn’t necessarily for a Senate audience, as it is for a more lefty Twitter audience.”

No Apology

Radio host Hugh Hewitt, who, like other conservatives criticized Ossoff, said the senator should apologize to Harp for his insulting quip.

Yes @ossoff should apologize and he should get beaten in November. He’s a ridiculous caricature of a senator and far too left wing for Georgia. And a mean-spirited jerk who traffics in slander as well. https://t.co/ItBsIGXxsP

Ossoff had two opportunities to do so Monday night and opted instead to stay on the attack.

During an appearance on MS NOW, host Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary, asked Ossoff, “Why did you decide to invoke Natalie Harp specifically?”

After rambling through his first answer without any reference to Harp, Psaki pressed him for an answer.

Jon Ossoff attempts to clean up his "travel with Natalie" line by claiming it was a commentary about all of President Trump's White House aides in general.

Yes, I'm sure that's exactly what he meant by referring to that one specific person in the way that he did pic.twitter.com/5fZc5emEyd

Ossoff’s response:

“Well, I’ve heard this particular aide referred to as his security blanket. And I think we could say that about any number of the senior aides in the White House. They’re not telling him what he needs to hear. They’re telling him what he wants to hear. And the nation is at war, and we cannot afford that. We need a team in the White House. We need folks at the State Department, at the Defense Department, in the United States Congress who take their jobs seriously.”

I’m quite sure these public servants take their jobs seriously. Turning them into props for a campaign rally may generate viral clips, but it does little to advance a serious argument. Natalie Harp deserves better, and so do voters.
