Abdu Murray, a Michigan resident who converted to Christianity from Islam, told the Daily Signal that defenders of Islamic jihad purposefully brand critics of the militant ideology as “Islamophobic” in order to protect their own radical beliefs.
During his interview, Murray specifically accused Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed of using the term as “a bit of a deflection” to avoid acknowledging that Islamic militants carry out attacks against non-Muslim civilians because they believe their religion instructs them to.
Murray’s comments come after El-Sayed appeared to justify an Islamist attack against a Jewish preschool in Michigan this March by saying that “hurt people hurt people,” after it was revealed that the terrorist lost his brother, a Hezbollah fighter, in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
“It’s a bit of a deflection,” Murray stated. “Here is what I would say: I think that the jihadists and the Islamists who are organizing it (the attacks) are doing it because they would do it anyway, regardless of what America is doing. Largely because they believe that Islam teaches that it will dominate the world and has to be an impact force.”
Throughout the interview, Murray referenced stronger tactics used by the Muslim world to shut down criticism of, or genuine concerns about, Islam, via “blasphemy laws,” which are similar to the ones being invoked by the Left in Western society today.
Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith told the Daily Signal he agrees with Murray’s remarks, adding that even he experiences this tactic being deployed whenever he calls out “the evils of sharia law and Islamic extremism, leftist radicals try to label me the same.”
Beckwith added that Islamists deploy this “scare tactic” when they “can’t stand on the merits of their arguments.”
In February, Virginia state Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim introduced legislation to categorize “Islamophobia” as a “crime of assault and battery as malicious prejudice or hatred directed toward Islam or Muslims.”
Notably, Murray referenced the “anti-hate crime laws” being invoked in the United Kingdom, which he claims are purposefully vague so that they can be overly enforced by authorities to prevent speech that can “ignite hate.”
“It’s incredibly dangerous to have that, and I do think that creates cause for concern,” Murray continued, adding that there is a “legitimate cause for concern” regarding a religion that “does in fact teach intolerance towards other faiths.”
The blasphemy laws Murray is referring to are strictly enforced in more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries that embrace Sharia law and are now trying to be invoked here in the United States.
In statements to the Daily Signal, members of Congress agreed with Murray that radicals like El-Sayed brand critics of Islam as “Islamophobic” in order to silence them for questioning the religion’s extremism. However, they added that the fear of Islam is rational.
“For those who watched 9/11, mass terror events, or Christians beheaded for apostasy, there is a basis for so-called ‘Islamophobia,’ ” said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, adding that the religion is in fact a “political movement that wants to completely upend western civilization and our Constitution.”
Roy called on Congress to act accordingly and “reject” the importation of an ideology that “hates us.”
Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., echoed Roy’s claim that the “fear of Islam” is rational.
“When you hear someone say ‘Praise Jesus’ or ‘Hallelujah Yeshua,’ you think that something good must have happened, but when you hear someone say ‘Allahu Akbar,’ you duck behind a car,” Fine continued.
El-Sayed did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.
