Well, to begin with, the slogan ought to have been Make America Better Again. “Great” smacks of empire – which is of course what we got (again). That aside, the reason why “MAGA” is becoming a kind of cuss word is not because this idea of making America great (or just better) again is disreputable. It is because Trump is disreputable.
Most of the people who voted for Trump thought they were voting for things that they believed – with some justification – would make America better, such as getting the rampant inflation triggered by “COVID” (specifically, by “COVID” stimulus checks) under control, lower – not higher – gas prices and a focus on this country’s problems rather than Israel’s problems. These are all reasonable (and so, unobjectionable) things. Nothing “radical” about them at all. In fact, they are remarkably modest asks that would not have been incongruent with the Democrat Party of the 1960s.
Most Americans just wanted a better life than the life they’d been living ever since “COVID” pretty much ruined everything. They voted for Trump in 2024 because they thought he might actually do what he said he was going to do. Or at least, led them to believe he was going to do. This does not make them bad people. Nor does it impugn the things they’d hoped for. The problem is that Trump is a very bad person who has managed to singlehandedly impugn everything they’d hoped for. He has made a mockery out of MAGA, which is now embodied by the AI-generated mascot of MAGA named Chudley – an obese imbecile who always finds a way to make excuses for whatever Trump does.
This may and probably is all deliberate and planned aforethought.
Trump was playing his role all along. At first, he was the face – wrestling-speak for the “good guy,” the one who gets hit over the head with a chair when he’s got his back turned to the heel, the “bad guy.” This was Trump in 2020. And also 2024, when he got up off the floor to battle the heel – or so he convincingly persuaded us he was doing. He put the heel in the camel clutch and made him (then her) humble, as the Iron Sheik – whose signature move was the camel clutch – would have done (and did to, to Hulk Hogan).
The crowd cheered.
Then it was time for a new act. Trump became the heel. He cozied up to the Tech Creeps. He told the people who voted for him because they wanted to see the other creeps – the Epstein creeps as well as the “COVID” creeps – held accountable for the creepy things they did that he didn’t really say (or mean) what he said.
He meant the opposite.
Not only was nothing done, Trump insulted the people who voted for him by about-facing on the Epstein Stuff, dismissing it angrily as a “hoax” after spending a year pretending it was very real. All of that was bad enough but then came the decision he made to start another war in the Middle East, something he repeatedly said was disastrous and pretended he would never do. And then he did it. The result of this has been every bit as catastrophic as “COVID,” in terms of the economic destruction it is causing – and likely to cause more of. Probably not one out 1,000 people who voted for Trump voted for this. They voted for the opposite of this.
Some will say that’s not true; that they did vote for this – by voting for Trump. This is true in a sense – in that all votes amount to a kind of giving over of unlimited proxy power to a “representative” who is in no way bound to limit his “representation” to what a voter specifically authorized and couldn’t do that even if he wanted to, because we’re talking millions of voters (at the presidential level) and it is impossible to “represent” even one of them exactly without not “representing” the others inexactly.
That is why voting is the larger problem.
The sense that matters is that most of the people who vote for Trump did not want this. They hoped for what they were led to believe Trump would do. That does make them party to the things Trump has done that are at odds with what he said he was going to do.
The trick now is to save MAGA wile dumping Trump.
That process begins by dumping Trump.
