Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on Wednesday said she will be forced to move away from her Washington, D.C., apartment because of death threats she said she received after becoming the subject of a federal investigation.
Omar has been the subject of government investigations for months. President Donald Trump said in January that the Department of Justice was probing Omar over discrepancies in her financial records. Vice President JD Vance later revealed that the DOJ is also investigating allegations that Omar participated in a sham marriage with her biological brother from Somalia so he could gain residency in the United States.
After federal investigators raided Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., earlier this month, seizing her cellphone, notebooks, personal computers, and passport, the congresswoman said this week that she had to vacate the residence. During an interview on MS Now, Omar proclaimed her innocence, saying she would “stand up to the bullies.”
“Obviously, I can’t continue to live there. … Because our address has been public and with the death threats that I deal with, it’s no longer going to be feasible to be in that house and have my kids visiting off and on, having people track them,” she said.
“If I continue to live my truth, if I continue to fight for the right things, if I continue to stand up to bullies and people who are carrying out ungodly corruption, I’m going to be OK,” Omar added.
The government’s investigation into Omar, who is originally from Somalia, appears to be based on concerns that she and her family lied on key paperwork about her age and other details in order to gain legal residency in the U.S. decades ago. The immigration fraud case could end in her denaturalization and deportation if the Trump administration were successful at proving such claims.
Omar has denounced the investigations as a politically motivated conspiracy against her, and used it to urge supporters to donate to her reelection campaign.
ILHAN OMAR DEPORTATION CASE COMPLICATED BY PROCEDURAL FACTORS
On Wednesday, she said up to 15 Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant earlier this month at her home as part of the investigation. They took 17 items, including several phones, according to Omar.
“You don’t show up to somebody’s house that early in the morning unless you’re trying to freak them out,” the Democratic lawmaker said. “Obviously, they’d like to see me locked up, deported, and all of those things. But I think the bigger satisfaction for them would be for me to be like, ‘I’m tired of all of you, and I’m going to leave.'”
