Here Are The Democrats Who Crossed Party Lines With Vote Condemning Socialism

While party leaders have thrown in their lot with the far-left socialists running as Democrats in races nationwide, several vulnerable incumbents are understandably wary of the trend.

That’s why several lawmakers on that side of the aisle decided to buck their caucus to join Republicans in voting to condemn the ideology.

According to The Hill:

Reps. Jared Golden (D-Maine), Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Don Davis (D-N.C.), Darren Soto (D-Fla.), and Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.) all voted for the resolution denouncing socialism, bucking Democratic leadership. Reps. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.) and Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.) voted present.

All eight “yes” votes are in competitive races for their seat this year. Six of those races are rated as “toss-up” or “lean Republican” by the Cook Political Report. Two, Vasquez and Cuellar, are rated “lean Democrat,” which still indicates a challenging race.

Democrats are increasingly having to defend their party from Republican attacks as the DSA has gained ground in primaries throughout the year. Republicans are staking out a battleground as defenders of capitalism while condemning socialism, and the House resolution was a chance to put Democrats on the record opting not to denounce socialism.

The show of bipartisan support drew some social media attention:

So you're saying the Democrats are now a socialist party….

Today, I urged my colleagues to vote to condemn socialism.

The DSA wants to pull up the ladder of opportunity, take more of your hard-earned money, and put government in control of your life.

We must reject this failed ideology and defend liberty before it’s too late. pic.twitter.com/58FReywSRy

Fox News added these details:

In a stunning twist of fate, however, the vote would not have occurred if two House Democrats hadn’t stepped in hours earlier to help the GOP through a procedural hurdle — blindsiding Jeffries in the process.

House conservatives had threatened to tank a procedural vote, called a “rule vote,” meant to unlock debate on several bills GOP leaders wanted lawmakers to vote on this week. That included the resolution condemning socialism and several other unrelated bills.

Five Republicans voted against the rule, which was poised to fail until Reps. Jared Golden, D-Maine, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., provided two critical votes to get the GOP over the finish line in a narrow 209 to 208 vote.

All Republicans wound up voting in favor of the resolution condemning socialism and affirming election integrity on Tuesday evening, however.
