Hegseth Fires Pentagon's Top Military Planner Over Alleged Iran, Ukraine War Leaks
Critics have called it a "purge" - but defenders have said the military's general officer ranks have been bloated and redundant. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has abruptly fired one of the Pentagon's top military strategists, curiously at a sensitive moment which has seen the Trump administration draw up options for a renewed, intensified Iran war - likely to come after the midterm elections.
Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia has been dismissed from his post as director for strategy, plans, and policy (J5) on the Joint Staff, a Pentagon spokesperson confirmed late Wednesday.

This marks the second turnover in that key position within about a year, after Sylvia's predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was initially removed.
Since Trump took the White House, Hegseth has pushed some two dozen senior military and civilian officials out of top command positions.
But what makes Gen. Sylvia's firing more notable and alarming is that Hegseth's office is citing "severe misconduct". He's stands accused of leaking classified info related to the Iran and Ukraine conflicts. However, the Pentagon has yet to state this publicly, or to offer an official explanation.
CBS reports, "The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel matters, said Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia was accused of misconduct for leaking classified information related to the Iran war and the Russia-Ukraine war."
"Sylvia failed three polygraph tests about sharing classified information with the press, the official said, adding that the case has been referred to the Department of Justice," the report continues.
According to a fuller statement on the allegations from an unnamed US defense official:

While it's unclear what precisely may have allegedly leaked out, the Trump administration has been angry over a multiple months-long avalanche of negative reporting when it comes to the Iran war especially. For example, there's been a lot of documentation on Iran's retaliation effectively making uninhabitable at least a dozen US bases and outposts across the Gulf and Mideast regions.
Meanwhile, an official statement from the Joint Staff was more cordial and professional: "The Chairman, the Joint Staff, and the Joint Force extend our deepest gratitude to Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia and his family for their 32 years of distinguished service to our nation," it said, while wishing "him and his family the best."
As yet, no replacement has been announced for the key defense planning post, and the development is sure to remain another immensely controversial shake-up.
