A Catholic priest in Ecuador spent part of his final homily warning his congregation that death comes for everyone.
Minutes later, a massive wooden crucifix broke away from the church wall and came crashing down on him during the livestreamed Mass.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died after the horrifying accident Saturday night at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil.
The livestream captured both the message that now sounds unbearably prophetic and the sudden tragedy that followed it.
This video preserves the priest’s final reflection about death and the time people give to God and their families:
Noticias Caracol reports that Sánchez Molinari was preaching about how people spend their limited time. He contrasted the hours consumed by work, phones and entertainment with the time given to faith and loved ones.
He told the congregation that everyone there would one day die, then urged them to spend meaningful time with God, spouses, children and family rather than wasting life on things that do not last.
The priest was still celebrating the Eucharist when the crucifix mounted high behind the altar suddenly detached. He appeared to have no warning and no chance to move out of its path.
The following video is disturbing. It shows the crucifix falling as worshippers cry out and rush forward to help:
The Associated Press confirmed that the heavy crucifix detached from the wall above the altar and struck Sánchez on the head during the Saturday evening service. Worshippers can be heard calling for help while the social-media broadcast continues.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil identified him as the parish priest of Perpetuo Socorro Church. He was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, also known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious order founded in 1732.
Local authorities had not publicly explained what caused the huge fixture to break loose as of Sunday.
The available footage shows the cross dropping from above and behind the priest as he faces the altar. It does not show him noticing the movement before the impact, while the congregation’s immediate screams and calls for help make clear how suddenly the service turned into an emergency.
A local emergency-news account reported the death and the shock spreading through Guayaquil’s Catholic community:
Local reporting says the Archdiocese confirmed the death in a statement signed by Cardinal Luis Cabrera Herrera, the archbishop of Guayaquil. The Church expressed its condolences to the Redemptorist community and to the priest’s relatives and friends.
Sánchez Molinari had previously served for years at San Lorenzo Parish in Vinces, where parishioners also remembered his pastoral work after news of the accident spread.
The Archdiocese’s announcement placed the loss inside the priest’s wider religious community. It offered solidarity to his relatives and friends and to the Redemptorists who served alongside him.
The local account also noted that the cause of the crucifix’s detachment remained unexplained.
That unanswered question will matter to the parish. A wooden structure of that size was mounted directly above the altar, and the livestream now provides investigators and church leaders with a visual record of the moment it failed.
The community is now grieving a pastor whose ordinary Saturday service became a fatal public tragedy in a matter of seconds.
There is no need to manufacture a supernatural explanation for what happened.
The facts are haunting enough.
A priest reminded his people that life is short, called them to give their best time to God and family, and then died without warning beneath the central symbol of the faith he served.
May he rest in peace.
