Politics makes strange bedfellows, especially when you’re gearing up for a White House bid.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has long been discussed as a presidential candidate in waiting, and the far-left Democrat seems to already be softening his stance toward the Trump administration.

He recently admitted that two initiatives involving the president and first lady are worthy of praise, as The Hill reported:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) offered rare praise for the Trump administration on Friday, endorsing its investment account program for children and foster youth initiatives.

During a press conference on his CalKIDS program — a similar state-level initiative — Newsom said he was “enthusiastic about encouraging people to get a Trump Account.”

“I think it’s incredibly important. It’s one of the best things [Trump’s] done,” he added.

Later in the same article:

The governor also offered a glowing review of first lady Melania Trump’s “Fostering the Future” initiative when asked by a reporter on Friday about his thoughts on this program, which sought to bridge gaps for children living in foster care to participate in the Trump Account program.

“Melania Trump deserves a lot of credit because this was one of the gaps with the Trump Accounts is … there [were] eligibility issues around custodial eligibility — meaning guardians, parents — so foster kids in many respects may fall through the cracks,” Newsom said.

Newsom’s remarks sparked some social media chatter:

I didn’t have this on my 2026 bingo card.

Newsom giving Melania Trump credit?

As the New York Post reported:

Anyone U.S. citizen with a child 18 and under can open a Trump account, but the free $1,000 is only available to children born in the roughly four-year window. Invest America and its partners are now working to secure philanthropic donations to expand the free seed money to more children.

Donors Michael and Susan Dell this year committed $6.25 billion to seed Trump Accounts for 25 million American kids living in zip codes with median incomes below $150,000.

Gerstner estimated that if families contribute just $10 per week, the funds could be worth as much as $1 million by the time a child is 55. The U.S. Treasury has launched a mobile app that families can use to make contributions.

Here’s some additional coverage of the Trump Accounts program:
