Bill Rasmussen, who launched ESPN in 1979, along with his son Scott, died on Tuesday due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.
He was 93.
ESPN started solely as a cable channel based in Connecticut and would evolve into the “Worldwide Leader in Sports.”
In 1994, Rasmussen was dubbed the “Father of sports television.”
“ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen, whose out-of-the-box idea of a 24-hour cable sports network forever changed the landscape of sports media, died today at the age of 93,” ESPN stated.
“A game-changer for the ages. Thank you for everything, Bill,” it added.
ESPN shared further:
“Bill Rasmussen, who died Tuesday, had a vision for what sports television could be. On Sept. 7, 1979, it became real,” SportsCenter wrote.
