Flávio Bolsonaro, a Brazilian senator and the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has reportedly fled the country to the United States after a controversial election defeat to leftwing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered police to seize his passport.

According to The New York Times, Flávio Bolsonaro is under investigation for an alleged money laundering scheme.

The Guardian explained further:

A report by the news website Metrópoles, citing people close to the politician’s family, said he was en route to the US. “The plane is in flight,” Metrópoles reported, without making clear where it had departed from.

Bolsonaro allies told Metrópoles that he would land in Florida on Tuesday afternoon and planned to request political asylum. “The Donald Trump administration has been informed,” the website added.

Allies also confirmed to the Folha de S Paulo newspaper that he was on his way to the US, and said the escape plan had been “organized and enabled by a lawyer close to the Bolsonaro clan”.

“They say the flight should land in a few hours,” the newspaper added.

The news network CNN Brasil reported that Bolsonaro had fled to the US with his wife and two daughters in the early hours of this morning.

Bolsonaro had not been seen since Monday and missed a Tuesday-morning deadline to hand his passport to the federal police, fuelling rumours that he may have fled Brazil after losing on Sunday.

A report in the Brazilian newspaper O Globo said that during a meeting with friends and lawyers on Monday, the defeated candidate had appeared “possessed and made it clear he was afraid of being arrested”.

Flávio Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing in the alleged money laundering scheme, which is reportedly worth about $905 million and involves betting companies.

Jair Bolsonaro went to the United States after losing to Lula in the 2022 election.

He eventually returned to Brazil and is serving a 27-year sentence for allegedly attempting to stage a coup following the election.

“Bolsonaro has refused to concede the election. The New York Times reports that the election could be annulled because Lula’s former personal attorney made a last-minute decision to keep the polls open, causing chaos and confusion,” Collin Rugg wrote.

“Bolsonaro’s father, Brazil’s former president, is under house arrest, and his brother is in ‘self-imposed exile’ in the United States. That brother, former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, recommended that his brother flee Brazil if he lost during an interview last week,” he added.

The report comes after the right-wing senator was ordered to hand over his passport to federal police.

More from The New York Times:

Earlier this year, a panel of Supreme Court justices also convicted and sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro for seeking to have the Trump administration interfere in his father’s trial.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has been living in Texas since early 2025, lobbied the Trump administration to pressure Mr. Lula’s government, through tariffs and sanctions, to drop its case against his father.

One of the targets of those sanctions was Justice Moraes, whom the right has accused of silencing conservative voices through his rulings on online posts. Justice Moraes’s work involving online disinformation has turned him into a hero and villain in a complicated global debate over the limits of online speech.

After the Jair Bolsonaro was convicted, the U.S. sanctions against Justice Moraes were dropped. But in recent months, Eduardo Bolsonaro and allies in the United States have been lobbying the Trump administration to reinstate them.
