Incoming Democratic lawmakers are slamming President Donald Trump’s choice to tap Stephen Miller as his new chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles as his highest-ranking staff member.

Democratic Sen.-elect Abdul el Sayed of Michigan decried Miller’s promotion as part of “incoherent messaging” from the Trump administration, arguing the choice runs contrary to Trump’s statements that he’s willing to work with incoming Democrats elected in 2026 midterms.

“Why appoint this man White House chief of staff if you want to have a productive relationship with the Congress that actually intends to deliver on the mandate that the American public has just given us? And we’ll wait to see,” el Sayed said on ABC’s This Week.

Democrats have slammed Miller, Trump’s longtime immigration adviser, for his influence over Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy, while the president’s Make America Great Again base has bolstered Miller and touted his policies cracking down on illegal immigration.

El Sayed questioned Miller, saying on Sunday, “I don’t know what Stephen Miller has actually contributed to our culture, our society, in any real way, except for to make us more angry, to stoke the worst kind of fear and vitriol, to weaponize ICE in our streets, to take American lives.”

Democratic Sen.-elect Adam Hamilton of Kansas also criticized Miller’s appointment to chief of staff, saying it is a “doubling down” on the policies of the first two years of the Trump administration.

“I’m actually surprised that he did that because the election was a repudiation of so much of what Trump has stood for, and I think so much of that was designed by Stephen Miller. So the idea of making him chief of staff seems really odd to me, and it’s concerning,” Hamilton said on CNN’s State of the Union.

One Republican congressman also ridiculed Trump’s decision to boost Miller on Sunday. Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN), who won his reelection campaign on Tuesday, said on CNN’s Inside Politics that Miller is “not liked out here in the Midwest.”

“If your team takes a beating as badly as we took this last week, you have to fire people. You don’t promote those who are, who were in charge of what was supposed to be delivered,” Stutzman said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), however, said he is “not worried” about Miller’s promotion. He told NBC’s Meet the Press that Trump is “mentally unbalanced, erratic, but he’s not stupid, and he is a good politician.”

TRUMP SIGNALS NO RETREAT FROM MAGA AGENDA WITH STEPHEN MILLER PROMOTION

“I think, when Trump looks out in the world and he sees millions of people working for starvation wages, he might not be unsympathetic to raising the minimum wage to a living wage,” Sanders said.

“I’m not worried about Miller. Do I think we can work with Trump? Maybe. I’m by no means guaranteeing it. But it is certainly worth the effort,” Sanders said.
