Lakeland police made one arrest at a Republican rally featuring Vice President JD Vance, charging a man who was escorted from the venue after noisily disrupting Vance’s speech.
LPD arrested Ben Braver of Tampa and charged him with trespassing and resisting arrest without violence, both first-degree misdemeanors.
Braver, 24, is a Democratic candidate for the Florida House in District 65, which covers south and west Tampa…
Lakeland has trespass warning authorization for the entire grounds at Sun ‘n Fun.
The Lakeland Police Department provided an arrest report to The Ledger. The arresting officer, Macson McGuirk, was assigned to a security detail for the event.
At about 1:15 p.m., McGuirk wrote, Braver “was observed yelling as loud as possible, thanking the vice president for the ‘gas prices’ and filming a grandiose display with a cellphone on a camera gimble.”
The officer wrote that he told Braver repeatedly that he had to leave and then escorted him off the property.
“During the escort, the defendant did push against my efforts to escort him from the property, and a hand and arm control was used to guide the defendant off the property,” McGuirk wrote. “Upon exiting the hangar, the defendant was again told that he had to leave; the defendant turned his body toward me and planted his foot in opposition to the direction he was being escorted and pushed his body weight against me.”
McGuirk then used a “leg sweep” to take Braver to the ground, he wrote.
Braver, reached by phone the next day, said he did not intend to resist the officer and voluntarily walked out of the venue as McGuirk escorted him.
