A U.S. military pilot is being treated for injuries after his fighter jet crashed on Tuesday in Germany, according to officials.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon went down near a U.S. base in western Germany that supports NATO operations in Europe and elsewhere. The accident at the Spangdahlem Air Base, which is home to the U.S. Air Force’s 52nd Fighter Wing, is the second such incident in under a week, after another U.S. fighter pilot sustained injuries following a crash in Michigan.
In the latest accident, the pilot safely ejected, according to U.S. Air Base Spangdahlem. The cause of the incident is under investigation, the military said. The F-16 was on approach to Spangdahlem Air Base when it crashed, a spokesperson for the base told the New York Post, adding that the pilot was injured in the crash and is receiving treatment.
Germany’s air traffic control authority said the crash occurred during a training exercise involving four F-16s.
“Two were still in the training area, while two were returning to Spangdahlem Air Base. One of these two jets is believed to have crashed while on approach,” the German air traffic control organization told Reuters, adding that the remaining F-16s landed at the U.S. Air Force base in Ramstein.
The Pentagon and Air Force referred the Washington Examiner to Air Base Spangdahlem for comment. The base did not respond to a request for further details.
The development comes after another F-16 fighter jet pilot crashed in northern Michigan last Thursday.

Similar to the incident in Germany, the pilot successfully ejected but sustained injuries, with officials saying he was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
A hazardous chemical spill related to the Michigan crash led to a temporary evacuation of all business and residential properties within a 1-mile radius of the accident, which occurred in a rural community south of Traverse City.
