A restaurant struggling and having to close is nothing unusual – unless it is one that had trumpeted a communist, “profit is evil” worldview.

Minneapolis’ Modern Times restaurant, which had a “pay what you can” policy for the last several months – ever since ICE began to enforce immigration law in the twin city – can no longer pay its bills and will close at the end of the year.

Prices were added back in August after the restaurant closed for a few weeks. At some point along the way, the owner change the name of the cafe, fittingly enough, to Post-Modern Times.

The operator posted the closing announcement online, saying, “I’ve exhausted every option without compromising the core fundamentals that make Modern Times what it is.

“I … hope that we can spend the next two-plus months celebrating the nearly 16 years that Modern Times has stood for creativity over cost, kindness over profit, and uncompromising values as a business in this country.”

The letter closes peculiarly: “The only way for places like Modern Times to exist in the future is to actively challenge the reasons why it can no longer exist.”

The Star Tribune newspaper described some side effects to eliminating pricing: “Neighbors began to be crowded out of the restaurant by people who could not pay and who lingered around the restaurant all day. Complaints mounted of open drug use, theft, discarded needles in the alley and overdoses on the sidewalk.”

In reporting on the closing, Not the Bee commented: “It’s amazingly similar to what Marxist nations have done on a larger scale. Implement Marxist policies, wreck your nation, pivot to some kind of capitalism to survive, eventually collapse anyway (just wait and see what happens to China’s population in the next 50 years).”
