Iceland has voted against reopening European Union accession talks, with opponents citing sovereignty and control of the country’s fisheries.
After a divisive debate, voters rejected the government proposal to reopen EU membership negotiations 52.8 percent to 47.2 percent.
Voters in Reykjavík, the Nordic nation’s capital city, favored restarting negotiations.
Rural areas strongly opposed the proposal.
CNBC explained further:
“It is quite clear that this matter will not move forward under this government,” Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said, according to The Guardian.
