Norway’s Parliament has launched an investigation into current and former top officials, including Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, over alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

According to Euronews, an independent inquiry will also examine the case and submit a final report by January 31, 2028.

Euronews shared further:

The hearings come against the background of the foreign ministry’s payment of more than 130 million kroner (€11.8 million at the current exchange rate) to the International Peace Institute (IPI) between 1997 and 2018, a think tank headed by Norwegian diplomat Terje Rød-Larsen from 2005 to 2020.

The Epstein files have shed light on ties between the US financier and Rød-Larsen and his diplomat wife Mona Juul, the architects of the 1993 Oslo Accords who are now under investigation in Norway, she for “aggravated corruption” and he for “complicity in aggravated corruption.”

The couple denies any wrongdoing.

In total, 11 officials who have held the positions of foreign minister or development aid minister since 2005, including current Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, will speak before the Storting’s standing committee on scrutiny and constitutional affairs.

“There are many people who have demonstrated very poor judgement,” said Jonas Andersen Sayed, who chaired the hearing at Parliament’s Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs, according to Al Jazeera.

“There is no reason to speak of an unhealthy culture at a large organisation just because of what one or several people may have done,” Støre told the committee.

Thorbjørn Jagland, who served as prime minister of Norway from 1996 to 1997, was charged with “aggravated corruption” earlier this year after a probe into his alleged ties to Epstein.

Elden Law Firm confirmed to CNN that Norway’s former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland is “charged with aggravated corruption,” adding that he “denies all charges.” https://t.co/rIbro7fJ2O

Al Jazeera noted:

Stoere added that, to his knowledge, Epstein wielded no influence over Norway’s foreign policy, development aid or any other government decisions.

Erik Solheim, a former development minister who will testify on Wednesday, has said parliament’s probe is an overreaction that will throttle the foreign service as diplomats opt for needless self-restraint, harming the national interest.
