Europe riots, but who and why?

A deep dig into the costs and benefits

Standfirst:

Riots in France are spreading across Europe, to Belgium, Italy, Portugal and beyond. In Albania months of protest are escalating. Unrest is directly related, among other things, to the affordability crisis, which is aggravated by what seems to be the top priority of Western leaders — which is war.

Someone is destroying the world’s energy, fertiliser and food infrastructure and we can only conclude that they do so because they want to. It is not surprising if the impact of those far off events comes home to roost.

Even as cities burn, many refuse to acknowledge this destruction. The BBC described the riots as “mostly peaceful”, echoing the timeless words of CNN during the unrest that followed the death of George Floyd in May 2020.

Behind this is not incompetence but strategy. The police and surveillance state is as much about profit as control. The outcome will be what it looks like: the destruction of private property, if you do not protect it.

As for WWIII, military strategists assess that western Europe is not ready for a prolonged, intense conflict — the calls for war readiness are a pitch for the public purse by a military industrial complex confronted with the decline of manufacturing.

If I was running the Army, like UK Chief of General Staff general Roly Walker, that’s just what I’d do. His appeal finds willing ears: politicians won’t confront the decline of the productive economy and its accompanying welfare state — but they’ll cut a subsidy cheque for special interests.

War must for now be regarded as a tactic aimed at domestic populations to distract from economic problems at home and to advance the surveillance state. That does not rule out a strategic ambition.

Opportunists are burning and looting as part of the great shutdown, the great reset or whatever moniker you apply to the deliberate disassembly of Western nation states.

Some people profit from the privatisation, commoditisation and tokenisation of assets, others aim for acceleration, to destroy as much as possible before the people resist, hoping that a Utopia, technocracy or workers’ paradise will rise from the ashes.

The hardest thing, when the flames grow higher, is keeping an open mind. The biggest mistake you can make is to jump to conclusions — and burn bridges with those who should be your allies. That is the purpose of polarisation.

I grew up with The Jam. Saw Paul Weller and crew many times from the late 1970s. If you have not considered the message of political music, this is where you Start.

  • Europe’s youth take the streets – whoever they are, they seek an answer
  • Living standards collapse, jobs shrink, big money flees abroad
  • Energy is constricted as Hormuz stays shut and Russian refineries are hit
  • The urgently dissatisfied turn to the powers that be, for at least an explanation
  • Answer came there none [1]
