Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has a tough battle to fight against rising socialist members of the Democratic Party, which could threaten his position.

Concha reacted to a clip of House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, who had advice for Jeffries.

“Hakeem is going to have a real time on his hands because there are some people who are coming in who, I believe, have ill designs for the institution. They’ve said they’d like to abolish a lot of those institutions, and it’s going to be very difficult for him to corral those folks,” Johnson told Fox News.

Concha said if the Democratic Socialists of America win elections in any “meaningful way,” Jeffries might not become the House speaker.

“They may say, ‘This guy isn’t far left enough for us, we want our own person,’” Concha said on Fox Business’s Varney & Co. Thursday.

Concha listed items from the DSA’s platform, arguing that “moderate Democrats probably don’t want to be attached to that.”

The DSA’s new platform was released on July 14.

The platform, “Workers Deserve More,” includes eliminating the U.S. Senate, granting amnesty for all immigrants, defunding the Department of War, and replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote for president. The DSA is also calling for universal healthcare.

“Dealing with the DSA means dealing with things that are completely detached from reality, especially when you’re talking about things like government-run healthcare, which could go to the tune of trillions, which we do not have the money to pay for. But that’s what they’re talking about, and that’s what they’re campaigning on,” Concha said.

“It’s almost like two different parties at this point,” he continued.

Concha said someone like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) would be ideal for the DSA to replace Jeffries. He said the friction between establishment Democrats and this new wave of socialists could cause an uproar.

“There could be a civil war within the lower chamber,” Concha said.
