Washington, D.C., is beginning its transformation into an IndyCar street circuit ahead of the August Freedom250 Grand Prix.
Construction is ramping up roughly a month out from the Aug. 22-23 race weekend, as crews pave roads and install barriers along the raceway. Lane closures and traffic disruptions are expected as workers convert streets around the National Mall into the first auto racing circuit ever hosted in the capital.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is a new NTT IndyCar Series race created to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The two-day event will culminate in a 125-lap IndyCar race on Sunday, Aug. 23, making it the first time Washington has hosted a top-tier professional auto race.
Federal agencies, IndyCar, Penske Entertainment, and the district government have partnered to stage the race.
Here’s what to know:
Where will the race be held?
The temporary street circuit stretches about 1.7 miles through downtown Washington and the National Mall.
The seven-turn course features roughly a 0.4-mile straightaway along Pennsylvania Avenue, across the National Mall at 7th Street, down Independence Avenue, and back to 3rd Street in front of the U.S. Capitol, passing several iconic landmarks on the route. The pit lane will begin at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 3rd Street, running between turns 1 and 2.

Why are roads already under construction?
Crews have begun resurfacing portions of the course to meet IndyCar safety standards, laying fresh asphalt along Pennsylvania Avenue and other sections of the circuit.
Beginning July 26, workers will also install concrete barriers, fencing, and safety infrastructure overnight, generally between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., while trying to keep daytime disruptions to a minimum. Additional traffic restrictions will expand as race weekend approaches.
Event sponsors, IndyCar and Penske, have said they are covering a significant portion of the costs for road improvements and course modifications, although the overall price tag has not been made public.
Drivers should anticipate intermittent overnight lane closures, construction activity, and traffic shifts throughout downtown over the coming weeks. Officials say most work is being scheduled overnight to reduce congestion. Motorists traveling Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, and adjacent streets should expect delays as preparations accelerate ahead of race weekend.
How to attend
General admission to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix is free, but fans can no longer request tickets. Organizers closed the online ticket request window on June 7, and all available tickets were distributed through a random Ticketmaster drawing.
The 100,000 who were selected have already been notified, and their digital tickets have been issued. Organizers have said no additional general admission tickets are available.
Fans who received tickets were assigned to either the STARS or STRIPES viewing area. Tickets are valid only for the assigned section, are nontransferable, and cannot be resold. General admission does not include access to the IndyCar paddock or pit lane because of space limitations. All attendees, including children, must have a ticket to enter.
Because the race will be held in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C., and near federal buildings, attendees should expect airport-style security screening for entry.
Organizers require a clear bag policy, allowing only transparent bags measuring no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches, with exceptions for medically necessary items and diaper bags after inspection. There will be no bag storage available at the gates.

What else is happening during race weekend?
In addition to the IndyCar race, organizers have revived the International Race of Champions for a special exhibition featuring retired motorsports stars.
Saturday’s schedule includes IndyCar practice sessions, IROC practice and heat races, followed by IndyCar qualifying. Sunday’s festivities begin with a morning warm-up before the nationally televised race on FOX shortly after 1 p.m. local time. Organizers also plan autograph sessions and fan events through the weekend.
