The Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged 18 aliens, including one illegal immigrant, in North Carolina for allegedly illegally voting in the 2024 election.

Twelve people were previously indicted for the same charge in the state's Eastern District, bringing the statewide total to 30 this year.
"Illegal voting is just that: illegal," Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said in a statement. "If you're not an American citizen, you cannot vote in our federal elections.
"We need to preserve the integrity of the ballot box by ensuring only those eligible are casting ballots," he said.
The new indictments charge Selvin Porfidio Gonzalez Escobar, 43, an illegal alien from Guatemala living in Robeson County, with one count of falsely claiming citizenship to vote and one count of voting by an alien. He registered in 2020 and then voted in the 2020 and 2024 general elections, according to the DOJ.
Others indicted include lawful permanent residents from Bermuda, Colombia, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Those charged are accused of registering to vote from 2000 to 2024 and allegedly voting in multiple elections.
A false claim of U.S. citizenship to register or vote carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Voting by an alien carries a maximum of one year and a $100,000 fine.
A federal grand jury in North Carolina indicted 10 noncitizens on Thursday for allegedly illegally voting in the 2024 elections.
Ellis Boyle, who serves as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced those cases. Among the charged are an illegal immigrant and nine lawful permanent residents. Boyle underscored that there is no more important right a citizen possesses than the right to vote.
"Every noncitizen who chooses to illegally vote subverts our constitutional republic, actively canceling out the vote of a law-abiding citizen," Boyle said in a statement. "This is not a victimless crime, quite the opposite. Every voting citizen is a victim every time. These indictments should serve as a stark warning to anyone contemplating voting illegally in our 2026 election: We are watching, we will find you if you do it, and we will prosecute you."
The illegal immigrant who was indicted, Eduardd Omar Majano Sosa of El Salvador, allegedly entered the United States in 2022 and was released into the country by the Biden administration. He is accused of voting illegally in the 2024 general election. He is also being charged with possessing a pistol that was found in his vehicle at the time of arrest.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina convicted Denis Joseph Bouchard, 70, a Canadian citizen, of falsely claiming to be a United States citizen when he voted.
Although Bouchard had lived in the United States since the 1960s, he never became a naturalized U.S. citizen and unlawfully certified his citizenship on North Carolina voter registration applications and ballots.
His false claims of citizenship to vote in North Carolina elections date back to 2004, according to voting records, which show that he cast ballots in nine federal elections between 2004 and 2024. A federal judge sentenced him in June 2026 to two months in prison after a guilty plea to two counts.
The DOJ announced other illegal voting charges earlier this month. Sixteen people allegedly illegally voted in at least one election, according to indictments and other documents filed across multiple states in federal court.
