DEVELOPING: Ground Stop Issued At Two Major U.S. Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop Monday morning, pausing arriving and departing flights at Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport because of an equipment failure.

The ground stop also applies to Teterboro Airport.

“The FAA is pausing flights into Philadelphia International, Teterboro and Newark Liberty International airports due to issues with some frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON,” a spokesperson said, according to CBS News.

The ground stop was ordered around 10 a.m. and has been extended to at least 1:45 p.m.

TRACON stands for Terminal Radar Approach Control. It is an air traffic control facility that uses radar and radios to guide planes approaching and departing from airports.

No details were released about what caused the outage.

Equipment issues at a New York radar facility slowed flights at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday morning.

The issue was at the New York TRACON, a terminal radar approach control facility in East Garden City, New York.

Flight cancellations and delays also disrupted operations at other U.S. airports Monday, though many were tied to thunderstorms and low clouds, not the equipment issue affecting Newark, Philadelphia and Teterboro.

United Airlines reported the most delays and cancellations of any U.S. carrier, with 102 flight delays and 22 cancellations Monday.
