Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed should be disqualified from holding office if he is tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, a designated foreign terrorist organization, a Republican congresswoman said.
“Any congressional candidate with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood should be immediately disqualified,” Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., told the Daily Signal. “Public office is a public trust, and it must never be entrusted to those who hate everything our country stands for.”
Miller’s remarks come after El-Sayed denied having any direct or family ties to the radical terrorist organization during an interview with “Meet the Press” in October.
However, now-deleted tweets from El-Sayed’s family members appear to contradict the claim.
“My family has long been MB,” Eman Abdelhadi, El-Sayed’s half-sister, wrote shortly after Egypt elected Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi as president.
“I have had family jailed for being a part of it,” his half-sister wrote in 2013. “Praying for all my family that supports the #MB in Egypt. Lie low, stay safe.”
In another tweet, the sister, who shares El-Sayed’s mother, boasted about how her mother was an activist for the Muslim Brotherhood while in college in the 1970s.
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, El-Sayed wrote a Substack article in 2021, which he has now deleted, that called a senior Muslim Brotherhood official, imprisoned in Egypt for supporting the organization, “my friend.”
“The now-deleted Substack post comes almost a decade after El-Sayed, an adjunct professor at Columbia University at the time, wrote an op-ed that urged former President Barack Obama to aid the Muslim Brotherhood militants who later overthrew the secular Egyptian government.
“It is in America’s interest to support Egyptian protesters’ efforts to achieve the ability to speak their minds and have a say in how they are governed,” he continued in his op-ed.
“If the U.S. truly wants to be the beacon of justice and liberty that it claims it does, it would behoove the Obama administration to fall decisively behind the protesters in Egypt,” El-Sayed concluded.
El-Sayed did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.
