Christa Pike has been released from the hospital and is back in prison after surviving an execution attempt in Tennessee that left her unconscious and on a ventilator.

Pike is on death row for the premeditated torture and murder of a college classmate in 1995. The prisoner was set to be executed on Sept. 30, but the process went awry when she woke up following what was supposed to be two doses of a lethal injection. The botched execution sent Pike to a local hospital in Nashville, where she regained consciousness on Tuesday and began the process of walking again on Wednesday.

The woman’s lawyers said Saturday that she was discharged from the hospital and is back at the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she has been incarcerated for over 30 years for murder.

“She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances,” her attorneys said in a statement. “She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery.”

The case has gained national scrutiny as it makes Pike the only person known to have survived an execution attempt in the U.S., according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Pike’s legal team swiftly renewed their calls for Lee to commute Pike’s death sentence, following the botched execution. If the governor reduces her sentence to life in prison without parole, Tennessee will not be able to seek to execute Pike a second time.
