This is a strange story…

A mysterious animal is terrorizing a neighborhood in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

This creature, which is small but “unusually aggressive,” has already attacked at least three people in less than 48 hours.

Officials are trying to track this animal down and are concerned about the risk of rabies it poses to the public.

Here’s some wild footage from one of the attacks:

A mystery animal has attacked three separate people in Lebanon, New Hampshire in under 48 hours – grabbing one man’s bag, latching onto another’s legs. Police still can’t confirm if it’s a gray fox or a fisher cat. Their top concern: rabies.

Witnesses believe the animal might be either a gray fox or a fisher cat — the latter of which is actually a member of the weasel family and looks like this:

I think it’s a fisher cat. We have them in upstate NY. They should definitely worry about rabies. The fisher cat is very shy and rarely seen let alone approach a person. pic.twitter.com/oT7DjiSwo3

Both of these animals are normally shy and generally try to avoid people.

But, as you probably know, rabies can turn even the gentlest animal ferocious.

The New York Post shared statements from the Lebanon Police Chief and one witness:

“It’s concerning because of the animal attacking people. That’s usually indicative of something being wrong with the animal, most likely rabies,” Lebanon Police Chief Phillip Roberts said, according to WMUR.

“And then, you know, the fact that it’s coming out and scratching and biting at people. That’s obviously a concern to us,” Roberts added.

“Oh my goodness, that’s the scariest thing,” one local told the outlet, adding, “Like there’s not enough to look out for these days, now you gotta look out for fisher cats in the parking lot.”

Police are working with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department to locate the animal and determine whether it is sick.

Residents, employees and visitors in the area are being told to stay away from any wild animal acting aggressively or unusually.

“Do not approach, attempt to capture, feed, or otherwise interact with the animal,” police said

Anyone who spots the animal should move to a safe location and call Lebanon police or Fish and Game.

At this time, officials have not officially identified the animal or located it.

What do you think it is?

If not a gray fox or fisher cat, some folks on X have some ideas…

Its the notorious badger squirrel, a beast so vicious and cantankerous that you would never want to meet it at night. Some say thier cousins the flying badger squirrels are not really squirrels. pic.twitter.com/RY3KbtApeE
